There is a design issue on the circuit board of the HVAC control panel. There is a relay that powers the AC compressor clutch when needed. After years of service the relay fails. Maybe it is due to under dimensioning, or maybe it is the lack of proper snubbing of the relay contacts (snubbing is adding a component so that the contacts do not burn up when the coil of teh clutch gets deactivated ... which causes a voltage high enough to generate a serious spark)
Anyway, if the relay fails it needs repairing, but you can consider preventing it to fail at all.
Here's two documents shared by Rich Andrade (Electronikrepair.com). Rich sells the kits for various models.
The idea is to use the output of the AC console relay towards the clutch to power up a strong relay close to the clutch to actually power the clutch. Even if that strong relay would fail, replacing is easy to do.
