For model year 1980 the 928 gained a big brother, the 928 S, which was also shown at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1979. The 300 HP S was a real power pack. It fulfilled the desire of many customers for more power and further underlined the role of the 928 as a faster sports tourer. "It is on the motorway that the Porsche plays its trump card", found the trade magazine auto motor und sport. The capacity of the eight-cylinder engine was now 4.7 litres and compression was 10:1 which meant that the S used super rather than normal petrol.
Re-shaped alloy rims, an electrically adjustable external mirror on the passenger side and small front and rear spoilers distinguished the new appearance of the S, which reached a top speed of 250 km/h and could accelerate to 100 km/h in under 7 seconds. The considerably higher price compared with the normal 928 included amongst other things a climate control system. "This kind of car can only be truly appreciated if you drive it to Monte Carlo" said press correspondent Manfred Jantke. Vice world-champion racing cyclist Didi Thurau was headed in other directions, but he still recognised the qualities of the 928 S and bought one.
The 928 was visually unaltered in 1980 but its engine was converted to super petrol. "It is our aim to prove that it is possible to achieve sensible consumption values even with a large capacity eight-cylinder engine," said the then Engineering Chief, Helmut Bott and pointed out the now greater compression ratio. In fact the tester registered a drastic consumption reduction of some 25 %
