I'm looking for information re a resistor that will eliminate an air bag error light on the dash. A few of us have taken the step of replacing the 928 4-spoke steering wheel with a 996 3-spoke steering wheel. It just looks sleeker and the grip is superior. To make this work one must hone 5mm from the inside of the 996 hub to get more purchase in order that the nut has sufficient thread depth on the shaft. And you must supply a 996 clock spring to make the proper connections to the air bag computer, those are readily available on ebay. It is suggested that butt splices work better. The computer is very demanding and if a solder joint is used, it may trigger an air bag error warning. You can cancel it with the turn signal stalk, but it will re-appear every 10 minutes or so.

If one is of a mind to, there is a work-around using a resistor to fool the computer., which means no signal goes to the computer and no error is generated. There is some question as to whether a 20+ year old bag will fire correctly if at but make no mistake, one will have no driver's air bag activity if the resistor does its thing; I had two sources for the resistor: Alllied Electronics (alliedelec.com) #296-5559 and OHMITE, 45F3ROE: neither of those show up in searches at those sites now. There was a thread about 2007 regarding this and some info does come up now, but not the original poster.

I installed a Momo wheel in my GTS. The factory airbag is looking for a 3 OHM resistance to verify it's there and operational. I simply installed a 3 ohm resistor in the air bag plug, problem solved. However my first resistor was a cheap one from Radio Shack and I ended up ordering a different one with tighter specifications from Allied Electronics. Worked perfectly up to the point of selling the car.
