Speaker repair

The bass speakers in my GTS where making funny noises when I turned the volume up. Especially the left speaker made scraping sounds and that was a signal that a repair or replacement should be scheduled.

First I browsed for a replacement, but that is not such an easy way. The speaker housing is one plastic assembly that is curved and fits cicely on the GTS interior curves. Cutting the speaker out and fitting another one in would be the only option in my opinion. Then looking for a 2 Ohm speaker was the next challenge. They barely exist.

So after consideration I decided to go for repair. here are some pictures of what I did. The new foam is a bit stiff and that made the bass sound a bit dimm, but that is expected behavior and will change after some hours of playing music.

Here is where I bought the foam surrounds:

Taking the grill of takes some skill and patience. Try not to break it. There is an opening at the bottom and gently lift it of the clamp are starting there. Do not pry too much on other areas. It has 3 spots where it clamps, taking the bottom off makes the other ones easier.

The old foam was more like chewing gum and needed careful separation from the speaker and plastic enclosure. It was in worse shape than I had imagined.
