The small hose between the heater valve and the engine sometimes breaks and creates a huge amount of white smoke. It is not always a head gasket that blows... :) If the little hose breaks, the coolant sprays on the hot exhaust. Lots of it, creating a big smoke scene.  You'd be surprised how quickly 15 liters of coolant are gone
